Website: The Flying K Ranch Referred by: Clicked on a 'Guestbooks by GuestWorld' Button From: Cedar Park, Texas Time: 1999-02-19 09:03:28 Comments: As a former member of the 4486th Troop Carrier Sq.(Provisional) TAC, Eglin AFB, FL, I feel like I was in at the beginning of the Jolly Green Giant saga. I was there in 1964 when they first put the green paint on. I remember it was a temporary flat OD paint and had to be to be touched up anytime oil or JP-4 leaked on it. That was for Excercise Indian River. Later, when we went to West Plains, MO, for Operation Goldfire I, they even painted over the Stars & Bars with blue & white concentric squares(never found out why). I really enjoy your site, particularly the origin story by Jerry Jennings. I had thje pleasure of serving with him on H-21's at Turner AFB, GA, as members of the 1370th Photo Mapping Wing. Keep up the excellent work. Come visit The Ranch some time, we have a lot of helicopter stuff there as well as fixed wing. |

I don't know how he got my address. That is a matter that I will clear up soon. He gave me the Jolly Green Web page address. I was honored to serve as commander of the 37th from the time that Lt.Col John Delvin left until I left on December 12, 1969. I have told many of my associates that being in the 37th Rescue and Recovery Squadron was the TRUE highlight of my 30 years in the Air Force. It beats any assignment in the States. I would be extremely pleased to get mail from anyone that was in Vietnam at the same time or , before or after. My First Sergeant was MSG Johnny Villa, from San Antonio, Texas. A great man. LtC. Sid Sosnow took over after I left. Heard we lost a chopper and a crew in March or April of 1970. God was with us in '69. We only lost one chopper, but got the crew out. Any of you out there, let me hear from you. I still relive many of the rescues and parties. Once a Jolly Green, ALWAYS A JOLLY GREEN!!! Jolly Green #1, 1969. God Bless. |

I too have worked on H-3s, H-53's, Hueys, and now the H-60 Pavehawk. I too miss the H-3 more than any of the other Helo's and it will always have a "special" place in my heart. We have several Maintenance and Operations people here with H-3 backgrounds and most of them that I've talked to share this feeling. I'm not quite sure what it is about the H-3 that makes it so "missable". It was kinda like an old car that you had for years that you could always count on. And yes, each one had it's own distinct personality. Not alot of gee-whiz "bells and whistles" but just pull the collective and go flying!!! GO JOLLY GREENS |

The PJ (AFC?) spent about twenty minutes on the ground securing the survivor to the penetrator, (broken back), and waiting for a ride home. No call signs are available at this writing, all else is pretty firm. If any of this sounds the least bit familiar, bust your butt to help us get this one nailed down and I'll help you put it back together. |

It always made my day when a successful rescue was accomplished and I knew I had a tiny, tiny bit, of a hand in it by helping to keep the HH3Es & HH53s operational so that the rescue could be accomplished, I wish you all a Happy New Year with fair winds and calm seas. Name: Steve Whitton Website: Referred by: From a Friend From: Fullerton, CA Time: 1998-12-31 17:51:27 Comments: MIA... 37th ARS I am looking for information on MSgt Jim Thomas (USAF Pararescue). He was shot down On November 25, 1971 (Thanksgiving Day), while on a TDY assignment, he was on a rescue mission with five other crew members which successfully retrieved 13 soldiers whose helicopter had been shot down. The chopper, a HH-53C (Jolly Green 70), took ground fire during the rescue. The crew stopped at a forward base camp to make sure the chopper was safe to fly. They encountered a heavy rain storm on the flight back, when the chopper took more fire and the pilot was hit. It began a slow, controlled descent and impacted in the Nha Be River. Once it hit the water it did a severe end over flip, and the chopper sank immediately. Three men, Capt. John W. George, Maj. Robert B. Swenck, and A1C Thomas D. Prose were killed immediately. There were two survivors, the flight engineer and a third Pararescueman. My father was never recovered. Please contact me if you have any information @ bluespwr@flash.net |

I crew chiefed HH3E 67-14723 at Kirtland in '77, worked the HH53H (MH53J) pave lows at Kirtland in '78 while tdy from RAF Woodbridge (67th ARRS). I was at Korat when the 111's left and the AC130 and super jollies came in from NKP. I was a weapons mechanic then and cross trained in '76 to crew chief. I'm still a leg. I found a PJ's picture on the web and we use it on the project web page, view at www.raytheon.com, and search on DMD. Can somebody put a name to this guy? If it can't hover , it's gotta really suck! |

My father worked with you folks as a Sandy with the 602 SOS. Unfortunately he went down while on SAR standby orbiting LS32 on 22 September '68 for no apparent reason. No chute, no beeper. You folks had the best view as you hovered over the crashsite of Sandy 3. I'm interested in talking to anyone involved or anyone that can tell me where to get copies of after-action reports. Truth and cooperation from government sources has been mostly dismal. Feel free to contact me at: Charles F. My WOCS class #99-004 will begin 16 Nov 98. I expect to graduate in mid-January. Pilot training will begin approximately two weeks after graduation from WOCS. My hope is that I will receive a transition to the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior so that I may spy on my enemies and then kill them with my deadly little helicopter. Failing that, I'll accept a CH-47 Chinook and happily fly inadvertant barrel rolls while defacating an endless stream of paratroopers, howitzers and humvees. I'll keep you all posted. Drink hard, FLY SAFE. That others may live... |

I was then assigned to the 21st SOS at NKP Thailand as a Flt. Eng. in Sept. 1968. I flew many combat missions with this unit and was shot down on 27th June '69 at Muong Soui (Lima Site 108) while evacuating Thai Mercenary troops. Recued by Air America. Returned to States in Sept '69 and was stationed at 1001st Photomapping at Forbes AFB in Topeka Ks. Assigned again to 48th ARRS at Eglin in 1970. Flew as Flt. Eng. on 1 of 3 helicopters (HH-53C's) outfitted with night rescue equipment across Pacific Ocean leaving Eglin on 18th of March '71 and arriving at Udorn Thailand on 2 April '71. Was assigned as NCOIC of Flight Eng. in 40th ARRS. Flew combat missions until 20 July '71 when I was shot down on JG-54 while attempting to retrieve an unmanned drone aircraft in Northern Laos. Once again rescued by Air America Helicopter. Subsequently evacuated to a hospital in the States and 5 months later was released from hospital but grounded. Spent the rest of my career until I retired in June '75 flying a desk..... |

You would have had to have the fuel shutoff valves turned completely off to starve the engines.... or so I was taught. Gravity feed from the mains would keep fuel going to the engines.... unless they were doing some strange things with pumping fule from the bensen tanks. I started up and am managing the web site for Seagull Flight 61 (Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field, Florida), National Order of Daedalians. |

Looking for some of the guys I had the privelidge of flying with... Al Crabtree, Frank Club, Raymond "Jack" Armstrong Bobby "2 Beers" Hoak, Bobby "Rice Ball" Rice to name a very very few. I sure do miss the days of family and friends. Its not really the same in what they call "the real Air Force". I guess I really would raather be in the "Other Air Force" again. Life has been good to me. I'm in San Antonio with orders to RAF Lakenheath in Mar 99. My wife (2nd) Renee and I had a baby boy on 27 Mar. Its kind of fun being a "new" Dad again. My Kids Erin and Vaden are with Pashie there in Kirtland. Erin started High school and Vaden is a 7th Grader. I guess "Fun flies when you're doing time." I put E-8 on 1 Jul so you can all shake your heads and say, "You have gotta be Sh...ing me!" I guess if you hang around long enough they WILL give it to just about anybody! Well, I'll close for now. If anybody is wondering, DSN is 240-1926. I'll be here until Dec then on to the Navy's Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport Rhode Island. School is from 5Jan to 9Mar. I am particularly trying to find one of the PJs from there and then, truly a cojones grandes individual. My memory of his name is so uncertain I will make better time by describing him. One evening he set out to prove that he could indeed fly unaided around the hootch, and he did! Everything went well until it was time to come down and he broke one of his landing gear. His only response when cautioned about throwing away his crutches was, "Hurt don't hurt me." He very graciously gave me his Beret device when I asked for it, and it remains one one of my most cherished mementos from that most memorable year. His name may have been Casey, but even if that's wrong, I'm sure someone remembers the flight in question and can provide at least the beginnings of contact. |

If anyone can assist in locating these people it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who served. |

I have been involved with SAR through the Civil Air Patrol Utah Wing for 19 years (communications and emergency medical specialist). Also was an EMT for 8 years and a 911 dispatcher. Thanks for letting me check out your association--at this rate I'll probably stay with SAR another 50 years. |
